Rain Check

If you arrive at a store armed with coupons but find that the item you want is out of stock, request a rain check from a manager or employee at the cusomer service desk. The document allows you to purchase the product at the sale price when it's back in stock. (Source: All You Magazine)

Adavanced Couponers: If you get a raincheck during a special coupon promotion (triples or super doubles) the store may not get the product back in stock until AFTER the promotion ends. Unfortunately, the store will only honor the sales price of the item, not the increased coupon value from the promotion.

LOOK for rain checks: During non-promotion weeks, keep your eye out for items that are out of stock and ask for a rain check. Staple the coupons you hope to use with the raincheck and then wait, wait, wait...until super doubles or triples to maximize savings!! Here's an example I did today with an old rain check:

iPhone Apps

Last night at dinner my 5 1/2 year old asked me when he could have an iPhone. I was shocked by the question, but considering my iPhone is like my third arm, I guess he wants one too. I really don't know what I did before this masterpiece of technology! Extreme? Maybe. BUT, it is so practical and helpful that I know I'm a better person for having it. Or at least more productive. Ok, ok... here's a list of a few of my favorite apps:

MONEY SAVING:

Coupon Sherpa (Free)- Gives a list of stores and any coupons that correspond with the merchant. A few of my favorites are Bath & Body Works, A.C. Moore, Babies R Us, and Gap. When you find a coupon that you want to use it gives you the closest store location. Once you arrive, simply show your phone to the cashier and they can either scan the phone or type in the UPC. We're saving the planet one iCoupon at a time!
RedLaser (Free)- Scans the barcode on any product and then does a search to tell you the lowest price. I've used this in BestBuy many times.
Amazon (Free)- Quickly search any product to compare prices and read reviews. You can also see the Deal of the Day, Lightning Deals, and shop online with simple clicks. While I was standing in the store I changed the marble set I was going to buy because of this app.
Pandora Radio (Free)- Create personalized radio stations and listen for free!
AAA Discounts (Free)- Get discounts at 110,000+ places in the US and Canada. The app uses your location to find savings wherever you are.
redbox (Free)- Browse and reserve a movie, plus find the nearest redbox location. Movies for a buck- can't beat it!

PRODUCTIVE:

List Omni Lists ($4.99)- I use this app every single day! Basically, you create and maintain any list you can imagine. Think grocery lists (with prices!), to do, gift ideas, books to read, etc. When something pops in your head you enter it on the list and then forget about it. Brilliant!
AroundMe (Free)- I use this app every time I travel. Where's the nearest ATM, pizza place, gas station, etc? It give you the distance from your current location, directions, address, phone number, etc. Love it!
Dial Zero (Free)- Quickly dial the customer service numbers of over 600 companies and skip directly to a person= sanity.
Speller (Free)- Little known fact--I'm a horrible speller. This checks spellings of English or Spanish words and avoids embarrassing situations for me.
The Weather Channel "TWC" (Free)- Much better than the weather app that comes with the phone.
Flashlight (Free)- Makes your phone into a flashlight. I actually use this a couple times a week. You'd be surprised.
Fandago (Free)- Get movie and theater listings, watch trailers, read fan reviews, buy tickets, etc.
Rest Area (.99)- Based on your location it will retrieve the closest rest area and display them on a map. Great to know when you need a potty break!
Opentable (Free)- Make free restaurant reservations
AllRecipes (Free)- Get thousands of top rated recipes and use the dinner spinner to choose a dish by type, ingredient, or "ready in" time.

FUN:

Facebook (Free)
Urbanspoon (Free)- A slot machine picks a good restaurant for you to try.
FlipShare (Free)- If you have a Flip to take video this is an easy way to share the video content on the go.
ColorSnap (Free)-Take a photo and then choose matching paint colors from Sherwin-Williams.
Shazam (Free)- Lovin' that tune? Just point your phone towards the music source to identify and buy the track! We like to do this with tv commercials.
Postino (free)- Take a photo and create a postcard. Send it as an e-card for free or send a real physical postcard for a fee.

Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill

The Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill is a family owned and operated boutique apple orchard and cider mill located in the SC. We've gone as a family to "pick our own" apples and I've also done the Farm Tour with my playgroup.

This pic was in 2007...my oldest was so chubby then!

They also have a festival October 16, 2010 to celebrate the end of the apple harvest season. During the tour, Johnny Appleseed tells a story that incorporates God. I was thrilled!

They also have a tree maze, cider demonstration, doughnuts (yum!), and hayride. It's a great time--you won't be disappointed!

Festival in the Park 9/23 - 9/26

Rural Hill Maze 9/4 - 11/11

Character Building

Modeling Godly behavior is the best way to teach character. Since I'm human, very human, I can't rely on my behavior alone. So, I've found a few resources to help in teaching these traits.

God's Wisdom for Little Boys/Girls is character building fun from Proverbs. Each page has a short poem, gorgeous illustration, and scripture to go with each trait.

We got the boy version of the book two years ago and it is one of our favorites! Before bed we like to read about one character trait. For example:

Poem: God's Little Boy is Helpful

Being helpful is so rare these days!

But God's little boy helps in various ways.

His wonderful service is known near and far,

Like the help he gives in washing the car.

Scripture: Whenever you are able, do good to people who need help. Proverbs 3:27.

Discussion: Can you name one way you were helpful today?

Wise Words For Moms is a small calendar that is a great tool that teaches how to use scripture to correct your children. It provides questions to get to the heart of the matter and verses to go with each offense.

With my boys, misbehavior seems to go in phases. So, I will pick one "target misbehavior" on which to focus. Then, I use a white board to list the behavior, heart probing questions, and Bible verses for quick reference. For example:

Child's Behavior: Defiant Attitude/Defiant Look

Heart Probing Question: Are you obeying or disobeying with your attitude? Are you truly obeying when you obey with an unhappy heart?

Scripture: It is wicked for you to harden your face and foolish for you to despise instruction. Proverbs 21:29, Proverbs 12:1. A wise heart accepts command and a happy heart makes the face cheerful. Proverbs 10:8, Proverbs 15:13

The final resource is the Godly Character Traits Cards created by Sarah. I love these because there is a picture on each card for the non-reader. You can laminate them and focus on one per week. I suggest giving a reward of some type when you see your child demonstrate the "Trait of the Week".

Every evening when I make dinner I send my two boys outside to play in our fenced back yard. Because outside playtime is such a big thing for us, I knew I wanted a playground at our new house. So, we closed on a Thursday and it was delivered the very next day!

Family Fun ~ Lowes Build and Grow Clinic

I've posted about this in the past, but I think it's worth mentioning again. Lowes offers FREE Build and Grow Clinics every other Saturday. You child will build a wooden toy and get to bring their apron, goggles, and mini hammer home. Each visit thereafter they will earn a badge to add to their apron.

Even though the "rally cap" didn't help the Sea Wolves win, my boys still enjoyed their first baseball game.

G didn't want to take his new baseball hat off. He wore it everywhere, even during his naps.

Family Fun ~ Strawberry Patch

Every May we go strawberry picking at Hall Family Farm. It is a family owned and operated farm that has the best ripe, sweet strawberries!

I suggest getting one small basket per child and letting them fill it up ($2.09/lb). If your kids are young you'll be helping them the whole time. When attention spans run out and you wished you had more strawberries simply buy the pre-picked basket ($2.99/lb).

They have lots of kids stuff--a maze, covered fenced-in play area, expanded covered picnic area, and this year they added a duck race.

We ended our morning with strawberry slushies. My boys said this was their favorite part :)

Our strawberries have been in the fridge for a week and just started getting soft. I stuck them in my blender with some ice and a spoonful of sugar for homemade slushies. The boys loved them! (Thanks for the idea Elizabeth!)

FAQ~ How to Plan for Triples or Super Doubles

Every time I shop during TRIPLES or SUPER DOUBLES at Harris Teeter someone stops to ask me-- How do you do that?!? Here you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to plan for a special promotion.

1. Know the store coupon policy. Click here for Harris Teeter's coupon policy.

2. Find the deals. The best place to go is Southern Savers (SS) and Hot Coupon World (HCW). For SS, simple click on the store (in our case Harris Teeter), click on the post that describes the deals, and use the easy printable shopping list feature to check off the things you plan to buy. For HCW, scroll down and click on "grocery deals", then select Harris Teeter. You'll see a variety of threads. A thread is simply a topic (ie, Harris Teeter Triples) and then the members post answers to that topic. Think of it as an ongoing conversation. For our situation, we'll pick the threads that talk about either triple or super double coupons.

3. Print the Lists. For SS, simply click the "create list" button at the bottom of the post. For HCW, you only need to print the first post from the thread. It is called the "master list" and all of the member input from all the other posts are compiled in that first list. I select the list and print it out for both the promo match up and the weekly ad.

4. Print Internet Printable Coupons. Both sites will include links to any IP's that match sale items. I just click on the links and print those coupons in which I'm interested. Remember to hit the back button to print two of each coupon. (And, if you have two computers you can print two from each computer for a total of 4 coupons!)

5. Make a list and pull coupons. I sit down with my lists from the internet and write the items on my Grocery List by Aisle document. Combining the list makes shopping fast and easy. I also include the expected final price (after coupons) next to the item. When I'm shopping I like to verify that it is a close price match. Depending on your region of the country the price may vary slightly. This is ok, but it may affect whether you should buy that item. Then, I pull the coupons that match the items on my list. You will pull the coupons from your coupon box , binder, or filed inserts.

6. Go shopping. I take my Grocery List, all of the coupons that correspond with the list, my coupon box (in case I see a deal I don't have on the list), and my reusable bags. Note, there is a limit of 20 coupons per day. My suggestion, get the best deals on your first trip before the items are sold out!

I bought two Groupon deals today and want to share it with you. If you're not familiar with Groupon, you sign up to get daily emails of deals in your area. Generally speaking, these are "luxury" items in my world-- manicures, massages, pre-assembled meals. The Weight of Debt

When I first started blogging I read that it is best to keep posts short and concise. This goes along with my personality and writing style so it hasn't been a problem for me. However, I must say that The Weight of Debt is such a heavy topic on my heart that this post may get wordy. Please read it. Please learn. Please change.

Last Sunday my Pastor of 20 years preached one of the best sermons I've heard. He summarized my journey for the last 3 years and the reason I started couponing...to get out of debt, be content, live by a budget, and honor God. I try to get these things across in my Coupon Workshops, but somehow Pastor did a much better job. Do you think he'd come with me? I doubt it. So, let me summarize a few of my favorite points:

DEBT AFFECTS YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

With Your Spouse. I have two memories from my first year of marriage. 1. Guys are very messy to live with. 2. Money- we didn't have enough and we didn't know what we were doing. We both had debt (he had a car loan and I had student loans and credit cards). Neither of us had been taught how to properly manage money and we were lost. Our finances controlled us for the first 5 years of marriage. When money was plentiful, we were happy. When money was lacking, we were stressed. Now, we control our finances and it is such a positive change for our relationship!
With Your Children. Your kids are not going to be happier, better people, or better Christians if you have more money. I remember when I met with my "financial mentor" a couple years ago. She told me to shop consignment for clothes/toys because young children don't know the difference. It's true! The last two months have been a real life example for me. We sold our house and have been living in a small apartment during the transition. More than half of our toys are in storage. At first the boys were "bored", but now they make forts out of pillows, love sharing a room, and help out more around the house. When I asked their favorite thing about the apartment they said, "mommy and daddy being here". On the other hand, I've noticed everything wrong with this place-from the stray cats that roam, the endless poop in the grass because people don't pick up after their pets, the drivers speeding through the parking lots, and even the used condom in the bushes. BUT, they don't care! Don't parent out of guilt by getting them things. They just want to be with you.
With Yourself. When you make bad decisions there are consequences. Don't let your pride and selfishness lead you down a path of debt. I will never forget the feeling of creditors calling me in college and then working to pay credit cards off years later. You are valuable. Make decisions that will help, not hinder you.
With God. Just like we have rules to protect our children, the Bible has rules to keep us from harm. Romans 13:8 says we shouldn't have debt. Luke 14:28 says to count the cost and budget. Just because they say you can afford it doesn't mean you should. Wouldn't it be nice if those credit cards in college didn't offer me those high limits? I learned the hard way. Just last week we bought a house. Our mortgage company qualified us for a huge mortgage-- we bought a house $100,000 less.

BE CONTENT

Sure it'd be nice to have a new car or a bigger house, but you shouldn't go into excessive debt to keep up with your peers. Beware of covetousness. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 explains that we can't take earthly riches with us. Money is not bad, but don't spend your life trying to get it because you will miss what is really important!

What does the resurrection mean to me? When I was six years old I confessed that I was a sinner and that I believe Jesus died and rose again. For the last 26 years I've done my best to serve Him. It doesn't mean my life is easier than others, but it does mean that I have Hope! Plus, when challenges come I can follow the principles I've learned in the Bible. I trust that He has a plan. My testimony isn't one of an alcoholic or drug addict; I had those choices and by His grace I choose the more narrow route. Whatever your past, He can be your Savior today.

Lately my 5 year old has been asking a lot of questions about Jesus. Thankfully I can answer most of them, but sometimes there just aren't "logical" answers. It all comes down to faith. I choose to believe He died on a cross, rose again, and one day I will join Him in heaven. It really is that simple.

This blog is about "practical tools" to make life easier. The best tool of all is to have Jesus in your life. Not just church, religion, or a bunch of rules. Savycents Wallet Review

Two weeks ago I mentioned The Gift Closet-- a show that came to the Charlotte area with unique art, jewelry, crafts, etc. I was most interested in the Savycents wallet and I'm happy to say that I got one! I wanted to use it for a two week pay period and then give you an honest review. Overall, I LOVE IT!

Pro's:

My friend and I got the red color and it's so easy to find in our big purses (there's also black and pink).
There is plenty of room for all of my cards (insurance, AAA, prescription, debit, etc) plus room for my checks and stamps.
You can't tell from the photo, but behind each tab there are two sections. The first, I put my rewards cards. The second, I put my cash. Ex. Under my "entertainment" tab I have my 2010 Entertainment Book card. Under my "personal" tab I have my Carolina Clipper business cards. Under my "grocery" tab I have my store reward cards. You know I love organization and things are so easy to find!
Even with all of the above mentioned stuff the wallet is easy to zip and it doesn't feel tight. Great quality!

Cons:

When I personalized the blank labels to say "Coupons" and "ECBs" my fonts don't match the labels that came with the wallet. Also, my labels print on white paper and the others are clear. They just don't match. I realize this would not bother most people and that my friends are smiling right now. But, it would be nice if you order the wallet online to have the option of custom labels. I've seen this sort of thing on the etsy website. Just a thought.

The wallets are $24.99 + tax/shipping. You can order it online here or if you're in the Charlotte area you can get it at Mud Pie in the Blakeney Shopping Center off Rea Road. I know you'd pay at least that for another wallet...and this one helps you save money!! Trust me, if you stop using your debit card and use only cash you will save the $24.99 in the first month. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Empty Tomb Easter Breakfast Treats

To most Christians, Easter is the most significant holiday. The resurrection of Christ is what gives us hope and purpose for our lives now, and for our eternal life later. My friend Katie sent me this idea and I found a recipe online for all of those Pillsbury biscuts/crescent rolls I have from couponing.

Ingredients:

Can of Pillsbury biscuits or crescent rolls

Jumbo size marshmellows

3 T Melted Butter

Cinnamon/Sugar mixture

Directions:

1. If using crescent rolls, position two crescent rolls together to form a rectangle. If using biscuits, flatten out until about 5 inches across.

2. Spread melted butter, sugar and cinnamon on the dough.

Explain: The spices represent the spices used to anoint Jesus' body before His burial.

3. Give each child one large marshmallow.

Explain: The marshmallow represents Jesus. It is white because it stands for His purity and His sinless life.

4. Place the marshmallow in the center of the biscuit, then fold the sides around it forming a "tomb". Place crease side down on baking sheet so they won't open while cooking.

Explain: Jesus died and was place in a tomb.

5. Put more butter, cinnamon and sugar on the outside.

Talk about: The sweet taste of the spices and how Jesus gave us the sweetest gift we will ever receive.

6. Bake according to package instructions. The marshmallows will melt away to leave the inside hollow and leave a sweet syrup!

Note: You can opt to do all the prep on Saturday, place in the fridge overnight, and wait to bake them Resurrection Sunday while the kids are hunting for eggs.

7. Let tombs cool and eat!

Lesson: When the children bite into their buns they will be surprised to find the center empty. As each child discovers the empty tomb, repeat : He is not here for He is risen!

Shopping Trips

Today was the first day of triples and as always I had a great time. It was even more fun because I ran into one of my friends and we went "triple-ing" together! I spent $8.45 and saved $51.35. I was really excited about the kid size solo cups and the snack items.

Then, I went to Target to do the game deals. I was especially excited about this because my 5 year old and I play games every afternoon while my 2 year old is sleeping. It is our special time and he has come to expect it. So, he will be thrilled as I gradually bring out theses games. I spent $39.69 and saved $47.16! Library Closing

This past weekend I got an email from my friend Shannon introducing me to the budget cuts crisis for the Public Library of Charlotte Mecklenburg County. After more research I was shocked to learn that 12 of the 24 branches are going to be closed April 3rd.

As you know from my previous posts, we love the library. One of the branches to be closed is right down the street from where we are temporarily living...exactly where I was planning to walk with my kiddos to spend many of our summer days. The economy is effecting many of us in different ways, but I never imagined our libraries and all of the fun, FREE activities would be gone. So, what can YOU do?

In January 2009 our family transitioned to a cash budget system. This has been especially helpful in sticking to our grocery and entertainment budget. If we don't have the cash, we don't spend! I have been using plain white envelopes and they get the job done. BUT, check out this fashionable and practical cash budget wallet by Savycents! My favorite part...it comes with labels! :)

First Trip to Bi-Lo

I've mentioned in the past that you should pick ONE grocery store to shop because sales are on a 6-8 week cycle (click here to read that post). When I met Jenny she said her top choice is Bi-Lo. Every week I choose Harris Teeter (which she doesn't have in her area). My curiosity got the better of me and today I had to give it a try. First, I created my list here and then pulled all my coupons. Then, I checked out the website to understand their policies and went shopping.

Bi-Lo Basics:

Most Bi-Lo stores double coupons that are $.60 or less. However, if you're in the Charlotte area they double $.99 or less. (YMMV)
Like items are limited to 10 coupons per day. Otherwise, there is no coupon limit per day!
You can use a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon for the same item. You can print store coupons from their web site by creating a My Bi-Lo account. They are also in the Bi-Lo monthly bonus saver flyer.
You do not have to buy two of the B1G1 items to get the sale price.
They will accept competitor's coupons but requires a manager override.

The number one, top of the list reason I went in today was because they just started the Fuelperks program in Charlotte. They had a table set up right when I walked in and they are really pushing this program. I met another first-time couponer while shopping so it must be working.

Here are the basics of the Fuelperks program:

For every $50 a shopper spends at Bi-Lo, they receive a five cent per gallon reward applied to their new My Bi-Lo Bonuscard that is used at the pump to roll down the price of gas.
The $50 threshold can be achieved through multiple visits to Bi-Lo and it is all tracked automatically.
My favorite part...the $50 requirement is based off your total before coupons are deducted!
Your fuelperks rewards are good for the month in which you receive them, plus the next three months. For example, if you earn fuelperks on October 10th, they'll expire on January 31st.

Will I go back? Yes. I spent $31.54 and saved $57.90. I couldn't go without my HT fix so I immediately made a trip and spent $27.61 and saved $39.98. I still have $.85 left in my $60 weekly budget! Don't worry, I won't spend it all in one place.

I must admit that I like the layout, presentation, and overall environment of Harris Teeter much better than Bi-Lo. But, I think the fuelperks program may be worth the trip every week. I plan to let my fuelperks build up until the end of May and then see how much I save at the pump.

Each day Groupon features something in your area that is cool to do at an unbeatable price. If enough people (that's the "group" part) sign up then the deal is on. They offer everything from prepared dinners, zipline tours, organic fruit delivery, and home cleaning services.

I think today's deal is amazing! It's $30 for a Mani-Pedi at Polished NailBar and Spa (a $60 value)! You can buy it for yourself and buy it as gifts too. Since enough people (I'm one of them) have already bought this deal we know it's on. The deal expires tonight.

So, go get your Groupon! It's so much fun!

Snowman Soup

We woke up to snow yesterday. We were going to have a very busy weekend, but instead we've had some of the best family days doing nothing--and yet doing everything. Trust me when I say, this is just what the Dr. ordered for me!

By today, much of the snow turned to ice which made perfect sledding conditions. Brad and I had a blast going down huge hills in the neighborhood!

Then, inside for some "Snowman Soup" (aka hot chocolate). This is a great way to use up all of those candy canes from Christmas.

Was told you've been very good this year,

always glad to hear it.

With freezing weather drawing near,

you'll need to warm the spirit.

So here's a little Snowman Soup, complete with stirring stick,

Ordering Coupons Online

Charity's Question: Do you have any sites that you'd recommend for buying coupons?

Answer: Ordering coupons online is a wonderful way to stock up on coupons for products that you know your family use on a regular basis. It's also a great way to get a lot of high value coupons (like the $2.50 off Electrasol coupon two weeks ago) without buying numerous papers. It will never replace my coupon clipping, but it does for some. Here are the details:

Pick a Website (I've permanently added the links to the right side of my blog):

The Coupon Clippers is the most popular coupon clipping service and I believe the most user friendly.

The Coupon Carry-Out is recommended by Deal Seeking Mom and there is a 15% off your first coupon purchase by entering DEALSEEKINGMOM at checkout (expires 8/12/10)
The Coupon Master- E-mealz uses this service which is recommended by Dave Ramsey.

Ordering tips:

To find coupons look alphabetically by brand name. You can also search by aisle.
Pay attention to coupon limits and minimum order requirements. They vary by site, but if you don't understand the policies your check out process can be very frustrating.
Look for high value coupons with expiration dates that are far away.
A realistic goal would be to order coupons every 2 or 3 weeks.

Once you get your coupons in the mail, wait for that item to go on sale and then use your coupons to build your stockpile with things you know your family will use! Have you used an online coupon cutting service? Let us know what you think.

I've often seen websites list coupons from Publix magazines. I figured these were store specific, but Jenny explained others can use them. Please note you must live in AL, GA, SC, FL, or TN to take advantage of this offer. So, how can we get the Publix magazine too? Once again, I've done some research for us...

Publix offers three magazines: Greenwise Market, Publix Grape, and Family Style. There are 4 issues per magazine per year that are delivered directly to your home. Both Greenwise Market and Publix Grape offer manufacture coupons! So, even though we don't have a Publix store, we can still benefit from these two magazines since they offer manufacture coupons that can be used at any store.

Many of us shop at CVS and use the red Extra Care Rewards Program card.

Did you know there is a white rewards card? I didn't know this either until I went to Jenny's coupon workshop. She mentioned it, so I did additional research to share with you. Oh, how I want this special white card...

How do I know if I'm eligible?

Look on the back of your Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance card to see if "Caremark" is your pharmacy provider. If you're not sure, simply call the Member Service phone number from your insurance card.

If Caremark is my pharmacy provider, how do I get my white Extra Care Card?

Call 800-552-8159 to speak with a Caremark customer service representative and ask for the "ExtraCare Health Card". They will mail you a key tag.

What are the benefits of the white ExtraCare Health Card?

The ExtraCare Health Card provides a 20 percent savings on certain CVS pharmacy brand health-related purchases. Present the card at check out and you will automatically receive 20 percent off eligible purchases. Eligible items include CVS pharmacy brand items such as cold and cough remedies, first-aid supplies, pain relievers, allergy relief products, eye and ear care products, and many more favorite health-related items.
Savings can also be obtained when eligible items are purchased online at CVS.com.
The ExtraCare Health Card key tags are good only at CVS pharmacies, not at pharmacies who are simply CVS Caremark network providers.

Throw it out. You should only use one Extra Care card per household.

Some of you may like Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts. My celebrity wanna meet is Jenny from Southern Savers. Yes, that's right. I check out the deals on her site every day and use her list planner to plan most of my shopping trips. She's made my coupon life so much easier and I couldn't wait to tell her this in person.

I drove over an hour to a class in Monroe, walk in, and pay my ten dollars. I ask the woman at the table if Jenny is here (thinking she may be in the back with guards around her..hehehe). The lady gives me a blank stare and points to a woman right behind her. I wanted to defend myself and say I know her, but have never seen her. I keep my mouth shut because that might be weird and I didn't want to get kicked out. Jenny kindly stands up and I introduce myself and start rambling. I'm not even sure what I said except that my online name is Carolina Clipper and I've left you comments. She smiled, but since one of her posts can get over 100 comments I knew that didn't make me stand out. I asked for a picture and again, the registration lady gave me a blank stare. I didn't care. I had met a person that has helped me along this journey and I was very happy.

Since I've been couponing for over a year now I wasn't sure how much I'd learn from the class. When I found out her budget was $50 per week I knew there must be a few more things I can do. I'm happy to say I took away some significant tips that I'll be sharing this week.

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden

Martin Luther King, Jr's Day meant that my husband and kiddos were home. 60 degree weather in mid January meant we had to do something fun outside. So, we headed to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, SC.

I think the admission prices are very reasonable: $9.75 adult and $7.25 children (under 3 free). We brought our lunch and only spent $1 inside to get a cup of nectar to feed the Lorikeets.

My favorite part was the feeding platform for the giraffes. There's just something about being that close to a wild animal. Even though it was off season all of the animals were out. My only critique would be the aquarium area. Much of the glass had algae and the tanks looked dirty. The kids did enjoy the Diving Demo.

I always enjoy this zoo and it's even more fun as my boys get older!

Biweekly Mortgage Payments

Last week we received an invitation from our mortgage servicing company to make our payments biweekly. It intrigued me so I did some research and wanted to share it with you.

How it works: You pay half of your mortgage every two weeks. This coincides evenly with many paycheck schedules.
Why it works: By making 26 payments of half your mortgage you are in effect making 13 monthly payments instead of the customary 12.
The benefits: You can pay off your mortgage six to eight years early! You can save a large amount of money in interest (I'm talking over $20,000).
The fine print: Of the top five mortgage-servicing institutions, four charge enrollment fees that range from $295-$379. Plus, there is a levy charge on every transaction (my offer was $1.50 per payment).
Is it for you? If you like the convenience of having the bank automatically draft a payment that coincides with your biweekly paycheck and don't mind the extra fees it may be for you. But, is there a better way to spend this money? Are you making the maximum contribution to your retirement? How long are you planning to stay in your house? Would paying off your mortgage early help you reach other financial goals?

The free alternative:

If you get a bonus or tax refund each year, add the equivalent of one extra payment to your mortgage. Be sure to tell the bank that the additional money goes toward the principal!
If you get paid biweekly, take half of your mortgage payment from each check and put it in a savings account. At the beginning of the month, write your mortgage check from that account. At least twice a year you'll be including the equivalent of an extra half-payment. Again, specify that the additional money goes against the principal.

Harris Teeter is having Super Doubles 1/6 - 1/12!!! What does "super doubles" mean? Any coupon that is $1.98 or less will double!! This results in lots of FREE or GDA's (good deal anyway) products. Since HT doubles coupons .99 or less every day of the year, the key to this super doubles week is to focus on coupons between $1.00-1.98. Click here to see Harris Teeters coupon policy.

How to prepare for Super Doubles:

Organize coupons. Make sure you have everything cut and filed. I know this seems obvious, but if you try to skip this step everything else will be more difficult. Click here to see how I use my coupon box.
See what's on sale. The easiest way to do this is to go to Southern Savers and Hot Coupon World. They list the item on sale, the corresponding coupon, and the final price. They also list items that are not on sale but are a good deal anyway with coupons.
Print coupons. Use the links provided in the Southern Saver and HCW websites to print internet coupons. Remember to flip your paper over and hit the back button to print the same coupon twice. (I don't pull out my Sunday paper coupons prior to my trip. I found this was more work in the long run if the item was out of stock, priced higher than expected, or I just decided against it. This is a matter of personal preference.)
Make your list. Click here to access my grocery list by aisle document. I write the things from Southern Saver and HCW that I want to purchase. I include the anticipated price next to the item so I can see if it matches while I'm in the store. Because only 20 coupons per day will double I highlight the items I hope to get on my first shopping trip. Obviously, the free items tend to go first.
Shop! I go first thing Wednesday morning with my shopping list, internet printable coupons, coupon box, and reusable bags.

Book Review ~ Family Feasts for $75 a Week

If you follow this blog you know that my weekly budget for groceries and toiletries is $75. So, when I saw Mary Ostyn's Family Feasts for $75 a Week I knew it was a fit for our family. I was even more interested because she freely admits that coupons are not her thing. My thought~ If she can spend the same amount as me without clipping one coupon how much more can I save. I've spent the last week devouring this book and I love it! She covers many of the basics of saving money like sticking to a shopping list, creating a meal plan, and shopping the sales.

BUT, my favorite part is all of the secret tips. It's like having your great grandma here to whisper all of the things that made her a domestic superstar. A few of my favorites: Slice sausage logs into patties, buy boneless ham in those shrink-wrap packs and ask the butcher to slice it thinly for you, and make expensive oil like sesame or olive oil last longer by mixing it with a less expensive oil.

She also includes 200 recipes and has handy-dandy lists like five fast meals and five freezer meals for crazy days. I'm so excited to try some new recipes and to use her helpful cooking shortcuts!

I felt like Mary summarized our family's journey for 2009 when she said, "At its heart, frugality isn't about deprivation. It's about taking control of your resources. It's about making the most of what you have. It's about making dreams happen".

With the right attitude, frugal shopping and cooking can feel like an adventure. It really is a way to reach your goals. My goal for 2010~ To continue to cut the "froufrou" that sucks up bucks without adding to our quality of life. To spend $60 per week ($15 less than 2009) and use the extra $780 yearly savings towards our summer vacation.

Family Fun Friday ~ Festive Outings

As I mentioned yesterday, I love all of the fun (and mostly free) activities leading up to Christmas. This picture is from Santa's Wonderland at the Bass Pro Shop. When Gavin met Santa for the first time he just starting hugging him. Literally, a minute went by with him like this. The line was ohhh-ing and I had to pry him away. Precious.

Are you enjoying this month as much as I am? As an adult, the fun activities that lead up to Christmas are more fun to me than the actual day. I was thrilled when I found this nativity advent calendar at Target this year. I thought I would share a few of our mostly FREE traditions. My husband illustrates the activity on a small piece of paper (we have non-readers age 5 and 2) or I put a small clue in the box (such as a game piece for game night).

The Thankful Tree

This is a Thanksgiving tradition that we started a few years ago. It was the way we announced our pregnancy with our second son. It's always special to look back over the years and read what we were thankful for. Here are the details:

Cut as many leaves out of autumn-colored papers as you have guests. Ask each person to write down what they are thankful for, and place them on the tree or in a basket or bowl on the dinner table. If you have one of those little wrought iron trees that you can set on your Thanksgiving table, this will make a beautiful centerpiece. Tie little ribbons through a hole in the top of each leaf, so they can be hung on your "Thankful Tree." Take turns reading them as you enjoy dessert, then collage them into a Thanksgiving album as an after dinner activity.

Are you tired of clipping, sorting, and filing coupons? Do you know this week is triples but can't get your act together and don't really care anyway? Welcome to the Coupon Burnout Club. I've been there a few times. If you're there now, I encourage you to take a break! Here are a few easy tips on how YOU can save money without the Sunday paper.

1. Remember, most of your savings come for the sale price, not the coupon. The below picture is from my Harris Teeter shopping trip last week. I spent $86.98 and saved $134.77! In this example, if I didn't have one single coupon, I still would have saved $90.89!!! Simply make a shopping list from the items that are on sale. Point: Skip the coupons and you will still save over 50%!

2. Use your printer. In the above example, I can't help but point out that I saved an additional $43.88 from coupons. However, $8.50 of those coupon savings was from Internet printable coupons (IP's). When you plan your shopping list from websites such as Southern Savers it will tell you exactly what's on sale and if there is an existing coupon to match that sale. Just click on the link and print the IP's from home! Tip: After you print the coupon click the "back" button to print a second coupon.

3. Only shop at one grocery store. When I first started shopping the sales I would go to four stores per week. Wow! I'm exhausted just typing that. Remember that sales run on cycles and if you stock up when items are at their lowest price there's no need to go to other stores. Simply wait a few more weeks and those items will come on sale at the store that you frequent the most. Tip: Click here to learn how to know if something is at the lowest price.

FAQ: How Long Does it Take?

The number one question I get asked is, "How long does it take to coupon?". So, for one week I decided to track every single minute I spent on anything coupon related. Here is the result:

Coupon Organizing and Shopping Prep: 2 hours 22 minutes

Shopping in Store: 2 hours 32 minutes

GRAND TOTAL: 4 hours 54 minutes

My estimate was 5 hours a week so I wasn't far off. The most exciting part: I SAVED $173.27 this week alone by using coupons. Not convinced yet. Here ya go...

My total year to date coupon savings for 2009:

My grocery and toiletry budget is $75 week. I get $150 CASH every other Friday and don't spend a penny over this! This week I spent $112.48 so I have $37.52 for next week.

I like the flexibility of spending more one week and less the next (never going over the $150 for 2 weeks!) because I can stock up on big items when they're on sale. For example, this week I stocked up on BOGO meat. Another example, I haven't bought paper towels since the amazing CVS deal on Viva back in February. Being able to spend more one week and less the next allows you to take advantage of rock bottom prices to stock up. But don't forget my motto: It's not a good deal for your family if it makes you go over budget!

How to Create a Shopping List

The key to HUGE SAVINGS is to match store sales with coupons. Do you have time to do all that research? No!!! I don't either. That's why there are saints who do this for us. It really is as simple as clicking a button to create your list. First, understand that store sales begin on Wednesday each week. So, Wednesday morning:

1. Go to Southern Savers. There are plenty of blogs that match up deals, but this is one of the easiest to use.

2. Use the menu at the top to select your store (Bi Lo, CVS, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, etc).

3. Use her amazing tool to check the items you plan to buy to create a printable shopping list.

TIP: After printing my list I put it on a clipboard to make writing and viewing easier while shopping.

Advanced Couponers: You can go to Hot Coupon World and select a grocery store to see deals. The format is not as pleasing to the eye, but it is the best place to find out about deals before the general public. For example, you'll know that a triple promotion is coming prior to the Wednesday when the promotion starts. They'll even do match ups so you can prepare your list and coupons ahead of time!

Now that you have your list you need to get those coupons in order!

1. Create Shopping Envelopes. My Oxford divider tabs came with a built in plastic envelope on the back. A regular envelope would work just the same! Label each envelope: Grocery, Drugstore, Refile, Use.

2. Pull Coupons. You have two options:

Pull every coupon you plan to use on your shopping trip and put it in either the Grocery or Drugstore envelope. OR
Bring your coupon box and pull the coupons as you shop.

The coupon world is very divided on this issue. My sister pulls her coupons prior to her trip, while I choose to pull them as I shop. I found that I spent time at home pulling the coupons, then I'd have to sift through them while in the store, and I'd end up having a big refile stack once I got home because the store was out of the item or the item was more than I wanted to spend. My sister and I both save huge amounts of money so it's obviously a personal preference thing.

3. Shop. Regardless of your preparation choice, ALWAYS bring your coupon box with you! You never know when you'll find something on clearance or come across a deal you missed while making your list. While shopping, place your desired item in your cart and immediately put the coupon for that item in your "use" envelope. Obviously, if you have coupons that you will not use place them in the "refile" envelope. Stick to your list to stay in budget!

4. Pay. When you've found all your items I suggest putting your coupon box on the bottom of the cart and only holding your "use" envelope when you approach the cashier. Give them five coupons at a time. This way you can make sure they ring up properly. An organized shopper = a happy cashier = saving more money!

FAQ- Is this a good deal?

How do you know if you're getting a good deal? Simply put, you have to keep track. Even though pasta is a staple in my house, I can't remember the cheapest price I pay after sales and coupons. Click here to download my Price Grid. Use your receipt when you get home from your shopping trip to fill in the items and the price. After a couple of weeks you'll find that you tend to buy the same things over and over. You'll quickly see the best stores to shop and the lowest price.

Click here to see Southern Savers "Buy Price" shopping list. It is a good place to start and helpful to use as a barometer to see if you're paying too much. It should not replace you doing the research since prices and sales vary by region. In addition, this list won't include all of the staples in your household.

Your aim: To buy items when they're on sale AND when you have a coupon. Going forward, you'll never pay full price again. Sales run on a 6-8 week cycle so when you see the item at a rock bottom price STOCK UP so it will last you until the next sale!

Keep your price grid in your coupon box or binder for quick reference. Tip: I entered all this information in my Listomni iPhone app so it is just a click away.

How Long Does it Take?

The number one question I am asked is, "How long does it take to coupon?". I estimate about five hours a week, but I don't have a definite answer. Starting today I'm going to log every minute I spend on anything coupon related. This includes clipping and filing, preparing my shopping lists, and going to the stores.

The time spent on couponing has never been an issue because the savings are so significant to our family budget. However, it's asked so frequently that now I'm getting curious. I think one of my favorite things to do, especially as a stay at home mom, is to go out to eat. It takes away the pressure of preparing, cooking, and cleaning up a meal. Unfortunately, it's also very expensive. One way to help is to take advantage of KIDS EAT FREE deals! Unsure of where to go?

Charlotte On the Cheap has the best "Cheap Eats" calendar I've seen. It features local and nationwide restaurants and even has the time the promotion starts each day.

A new local deal is Kids Eat Free at Sweet T's Diner Tuesday and Saturday after 4pm (with the purchase of an adult entree). Don't forget about this Boston Market deal until October 31st.

Pineville Fall Fest

The Pineville Fall Fest is this weekend, October 16 (6PM-10PM) & October 17 (10AM-10PM). There is art, music, games, rides, and festival food. This is one of my favorite parks because of the large lake in the center (and the kids love to feed the ducks). I have fond memories of this festival as a child. Coupon Box

After six months of using a coupon binder I switched to a coupon box. This was a big step for me because I had already spent money on the binder supplies and I'm not great with change. But, something had to give because I was DREADING filing each coupon into the little baseball card holders. After three weeks of letting coupons build into a massive messy pile (and very little savings because I couldn't find anything!) I knew I needed a different system. Enter- the amazing, wonderful, time saving COUPON BOX!!

SUPPLIES:

1. Plastic box with handle and lid. I got the above Sterilite container from Target for under $10.

2. Divider Tabs. I got the plastic Oxford divider tabs because they are more durable, but you could use index cards.

3. Envelopes to hold coupons.

4. Zipper pouch with calculator, scissors, stapler, and pen.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE:

1. Create Divider Tabs. Click here for a complete list of Divider Tabs and their Subcategories. Write each underlined word from the list onto either a plastic divider tab or a large index card. For example: Drugstore, Health & Beauty, Produce, etc. These categories are in the order of grocery store isles.

2. Create Subcategories. Write each subcategory on one envelope. For example: the subcategories of Pasta, Sauce, Rice, and Boxed Meals would be on four separate envelopes. I wrote each name on an index card and stapled it to the envelope in a staggered fashion so the names would be raised for easy viewing (see above picture). Place these envelopes behind the Pasta & Rice divider tab. Obviously continue this until all divider tabs and subcategory envelopes are complete.

3. Cut and File Coupons. Click here for easy how-to instructions. This is the main time saver with the box!!! Once coupons are cut and sorted you just drop them into each subcategory envelope. Quick and easy!

Coupon Confessions

Coupons have changed my life. Next month will mark a year that I've been using this new method to shop and save money. It's transformed our family budget and become a ministry too. To some, I'm known as the coupon girl. Many times people admit budget and coupon mishaps to me. Somewhere in their confession the phrase, "I'm sure you'd never do this!" inevitably comes up. In an effort to provide you encouragement, I want to share some of my money saving blunders.

I let three weeks of coupon inserts pile up without cutting or filing. Result: I couldn't find any coupons to match sales and paid full price for many items.
I went an entire month without going to the ATM for our cash only budget. Result: We used our debit card and went over budget in every category. Over budget. Over budget. It rings in my ears!
I used more than 20 coupons at Harris Teeter. Result: I had 15 coupons that didn't double and my total was $20 more than anticipated.
I used a coupon binder (and even taught about it in my classes) for six months. Then, I switched to the coupon box and love it! Result: I wasted money on binder supplies and hours of precious time filing in those silly baseball card slots.
I lost my coupons in CVS. Result: Tears. Yup, after I spent 45 minutes planning the trip, getting all the stuff, and planning my transactions I couldn't stop the tears. I did find the coupons stuck between binder pages. (Another reason to use the box...hahaha!)
I intentionally skipped triples and then super doubles at Harris Teeter. Result: A much needed coupon break. Although, I did hate hearing about all the free stuff that I missed!
My motto in my class is "It's not a good deal for your family if it makes you go over your weekly grocery budget!". Result: I've broken my creed- more than once.
I've thrown away rain checks because I let the coupon expire that went with it. AND, I let my cell phone rebate expire as a result of poor organization. Result: At least $30 down the drain! Aghhh.
I neglect to plan out our weekly meals. Result: Stressful dinner prep and eating out too often.
I forgot to buy a paper while on vacation. Result: Many weeks of missed deals.

My admissions have one purpose--to shout from the rooftop "Get back on the coupon wagon!". It doesn't matter what set backs you've had. Start back today. Every little bit of savings helps.

Summer Garden

I have wanted a garden for years. Partly because it sounds cool to say, "this is from my garden", but mostly because I want to save money. As I become a more experienced cook I want to use better ingredients. I was shocked at the price of fresh basil! Let me start by saying that I do not have a green thumb! As you know with me, if it's not simple I won't do it. The thought of a huge, time consuming garden just isn't for me. So, I decided a small container garden was the perfect place to start. I got my pots 60% off from Hobby Lobby and then I bought thyme, parsley, basil, and cilantro plants from Lowes. All they required was water and it was a huge success! I LOVED making this "Easy Pesto" recipe for a dinner party.

Now that colder weather is here the garden that I've grown to enjoy is coming to an end. I was excited to read a great tip on how to dry your own herbs. Here it is:

Fresh herbs spoil quickly, and you might not need the entire bunch. To preserve leftovers, wash them and spread them on a paper towel. Place another towel on top. Cook on high in the microwave for about 35 seconds, let cool and store in an airtight container.

Roasted Tomatoes with Garlic and Herbs

This summer I have enjoyed many cucumbers and tomatoes from friends that have excess from their garden. I even went to a BLT dinner party in honor of my friends' bounty. What is Matthews Alive?

The festival is a grand four-day family event. There are over 150 artists sharing their work, non-stop entertainment on many stages, and great food. Plus, there is a Family Fun Zone that surrounds the Freedom Park Locomotive. The Younger Festival-goers can experience the thrill of riding their first Merry Go Round, rising over their friends on a Ferris Wheel, climbing through an inflatable Obstacle Course, Climbing Mt Everest in Myers Park, clanging the bell of a trackless train or challenging their parent on a dual slide.

The Carolina Raptor Center is hosting a FREE Bilingual Bird Day September 12, 2009 from 9am to 5pm. This didn't make much sense to me until I realized that all of the festivities will be in both English and Spanish. So, they'll have bird programs, music, food, raptor arts and crafts, henna tattoos, face painting, and reptile programs.

Yesterday I wanted to put on a long sleeve shirt just to will cold weather to come. Fall is my favorite time of year (specifically October). One reason-- all of the fun festivals! I'll be sure to feature many of them on my blog.

The first to kick off the season is the Yiasou Greek Festival. It features Greek food, art, and music. Plus, it has a great Children's Play Land with carnival rides, slides, face painting, cotton candy, popcorn, and snow cones for the kids. We've been many times and even now I can picture my sons laughing on the rides. Good food and great memories!

Admission is $2.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free accompanied by a parent or guardian.

My goal is to do a few small tasks each day and by the end of two weeks my entire house is clean. I also added an "other" column to manage those weekly errands that remain the same each week. Free LEGO's!

Last week I went to Concord Mills and discovered an amazing new LEGO store. The boys eyes widened in excitement as we quickly sat on a bench to play in the "living room"--an interactive play area positioned in the center of the store with hands-on Lego's and computer games. Then, we looked at the LEGO displays that runs the circumference of the store. This led us to my favorite part...a quiet room in the back with huge plastic Lego's for young kids to build and play. We stayed there for almost 30 minutes and I didn't even feel like I was at the busy, loud mall. Wonderful!

Now, for the FREE part...

Every Lego store has a "Monthly Mini Model Build". Starting in September, on the first Tuesday of the month, you can learn how to build a cool LEGO mini model and take it home- for free! A new model will be available every month and will be specially themed to that month. September is a LEGO book and pencil. Too cute!

Harris Teeter Triples August 12-18

Yes, I am still alive. Thanks to those of you who have checked on me. Life is just very busy and blogging hits the back burner.

This week is triples at HT and I am soooo glad it's back! I'm not a fan of the super doubles (I didn't even go during the last promotion).

Click here and here to plan your trip. If you're new to triples click here to see my step by step guide. Here are my goodies from today. I know I'll go back at least once, maybe twice.

I spent $54.07 and saved $146.24!!!! I finally hit my goal of needing a manager override ("MO" on your receipt) because my savings exceeded $100.

I think my new strategy helped. After making my grocery list by aisle I highlighted any item that did NOT require a coupon (like the grapes at $.88, the milk at $2.49, etc.). I also highlighted items where the coupon exceeded .99 and would NOT triple. The reason: HT coupon policy will allow 20 coupons per day to triple and anything after that will be accepted at face value. (You could use 50 coupons, but only 20 will triple). So, my goal was to get all of my highlighted items PLUS my top 20 items that I would use a .99 coupon and under that would triple. Make sense?

When checking out make sure to hand over your .99 and under coupons first. I give them five coupons at a time and watch them triple on the screen. Once I hit my 20 coupon max I give them my over .99 coupons (five at a time). This avoids computer/cashier errors and maximizes savings.

Did I mention that I did this all with my 4 and 2 year old in tow!!! Lots of team work (and bribery with the lunchables). How did you do?
